History

Errowanbang Murray Grey Stud (EMGS) has its genesis in Belgrove Murray Grey Stud, established by Roy and Gwenda Gerathy at Grose Vale in the mid 1960s. Belgrove proved too small and steep for Roy and Gwenda and they moved to Errowanbang (settled in the 1820s by the explorer William Lawson) in the mid 1970s.

EMGS is a 650 acre holding situated on Flyers, Gooleys and Cheesman’s Creeks at Errowanbang, 15 km west of Carcoar and 35 km south of Orange. It comprises extensive black soil creek flats with well shaded gently undulating hills surrounding, situated between 620m and 750m AHD.

Errowanbang’s phalaris and clover based pastures date back to the 1930s and are highly regarded in the district. Stock fodder is enhanced by cell grazing and supplemented with lucerne hay/ silage grown on the farm. EMGS, whilst never originally showing cattle, was at the front of the then current genetic pool. Murray Greys at the time were truly the “flavour of the month”.

John Gerathy invested in his parents’ herd and John and his wife Hilde took over Errowanbang in 2000. They reinvigorated the existing herd with the acquisition of a substantial part of the well-recognised Jyndarra Stud herd.

Garry and Annie Haines became managers of Errowanbang Stud in 2007. They have been instrumental in importing top line genetics from Western Australia, South Australia and Tasmania, and acquiring stock from leading east coast studs.
